ADDRESSING ALIENATION: IS COURT THE ONLY ANSWER?

In this presentation Mr. Colman will discuss:

  • The types of alienation that grandparents may face
  • The approach of Canadian courts to balancing parental rights to autonomy and freedom from state interference versus children's rights to enjoy a relationship with loving grandparents
  • Law Reform in this area
  • What does the social science literature tell us?
  • Legal and non-legal remedies for grandparents

Mr. Colman brings to the table his experiences as a grandchild, a parent of seven children, and now a grandparent with many grandchildren. He also relies upon his experience (38 years) as a family law lawyer.
